farming is fun

Today I didn't actually dig in the dirt but did ponder agriculture for a good hour or two. What I pondered is, what would the ideal collection of diesel equiptment be for a small farm? This would be powered by the smellilicious waste veggie oil picked up from a local fried food joint. Supposedly you can put essential oils in the oil to offset some of the french fry odors, but fried lavender, or mint, or orange? Sounds even worse than used up old fry smell.

Last month I started an apprenticeship at a farm. Its not organic but is small and diversified, with fruits, veggies, processed foods (apple butter, jellies) and some tourist action. At this same time I'm living in a city for the first time, a "second tier" city in the not super hip midwest (a little bit hip tho) and waitressing a lot, and going out on the town. Walking out on to the town! Biking! My passion is the farm work and specifically figuring out how I can improve the food system in my area. Plus figuring out how to get more young people out there growing food, that is a puzzler.
